Management Moments – Joy
Ah, Monday. Are you coming in refreshed, relaxed and ready to go? Or are you coming to work to get some rest? So many of us spend such hectic weekends that we need until Tuesday to get back in the swing of things. As a leader, perhaps you’ve felt the stress of everyone else wanting your attention first thing Monday, too! You have your own work pressure and some days it may feel like that’s doubled because of other requests. You are busy, but efficient, and folks know you’ll get it done…so they ask you to do too much. One tip: Read the article “Who’s Got the Monkey” from Harvard Business Review!
But just as important to effectiveness is self-care. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be any good to others. Every time you get on an airplane, they ask you to “put on your own mask before assisting others” because you’re no help to anyone if you can’t breathe yourself. This idea is true in most of life. We all know this, but it’s easy to forget!
How do you know if you are spread too thin? When do charities, family, friends, even hobbies become more of a burden than a benefit?
Ask yourself this: What brings you joy? For which things can you rise at dawn easily, or work into the night, or forget to eat…those are the things close to your heart. Do more of that, and less of everything else. We can’t build that business foundation or be better leaders creating a better world if we can’t think straight because we’re exhausted. We must take care of ourselves, so that we can lead others.
